Historical Highlights #015

This week’s historical highlights include Viking artifacts, history apps for kids, and George Washington’s beer recipe.

Ever wonder what it would be like to find a rare and valuable document at a flea market or in the attic of an old house? Read “An Intern Saved a Museum by Finding This Revolutionary War Treasure in the Attic.”

What about discovering a hoard of Viking silver in a farmer’s field? Read all about one man’s unexpected success with a metal detector here.

I just came across this list of “10 Apps for Kids to Learn History.” They cover diverse topics, including Ancient Rome, British history, the World Wars, and American presidents. I haven’t tried any of them yet, so let me know if you do!

If you like beer, you should check out George Washington’s recipe. It is found in a notebook he kept during the French and Indian War. (You can see the entire notebook digitized by the New York Public Library.)

Finally, you can read reviews of Canadian history books here.

Any historical highlights you’d like to share this week?
