5 Things I Learned in December

Today I offer a short post with some interesting facts. Enjoy.

  1. Libraries have a very old history.

2. Hippos can’t swim because they are too dense. Instead they walk on the river bottom, pushing off with their feet.

3. “In winter, the eyes of reindeer change color from their usual gold to a rich blue, which helps them capture more light during the darkest, coldest months.” (Cup of Jo email newsletter)

4. King penguin chicks grow to the size of adults while they are still covered in fuzzy brown down. They then live off their fat reserves while the parents leave them on shore for weeks at a time. (The Calgary Zoo currently has a king penguin chick; an employee told me it reminds her of a Muppet.)

5. Krampus is a hairy, horned figure of Austro-Bavarian folklore who appears during the Christmas season to punish children who misbehave.

I hope you’ll share some of the things you learned in December in the comments below.

I remember the hippos not-swimming in their pool at the Calgary Zoo. Also the hilarious fuzzy brown penguin chick. I mean “peng-wing”.
