Favourite Things: August Edition

At the beginning of the month I noticed online that some kids were already going back to school. One of my friends remarked, “In New Brunswick July and August is the only summer we have!” and I have to agree that I always consider August to be full-on summer. Since fall is my favourite season, I try hard to soak up all the summer without becoming impatient. With that said, here are some of my favourite things from this August.

Novels

Getting back to reading fiction this month felt good! These three were my favourites.

The Muse by Jessie Burton (2016)

A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler (2015)

August_2

Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry (2001)

Activities

  • Taking the kids to make crafts with the other girls from church
  • Shopping at Value Village (new skirt and boots for fall!)
  • Spending an afternoon in downtown Calgary (this involved a Vietnamese sub shop, two wading pools, a free train ride, and a retired fire engine)
  • Buying presents and tea at the mall
  • Discussing A Spool of Blue Thread in my Skype book club
  • Watching the kids play outside; they are getting so imaginative with sticks and stones
  • Working on a pretty aqua/turquoise quilt for my baby (I’ve adapted this pattern)

Bible Verse

To make an apt answer is a joy to a man,
and a word in season, how good it is!”
Proverbs 15:23

I hope you’ll share your August favourites in the comments!

My August favourite was swimming in many places: at Murray Beach NB (Sandy’s cottage), in Killarney Lake near Fredericton, in the outdoor Thames Pool in London, and at Ipperwash beach in Lake Huron.Lots of variety!
