Historical Highlights 077

I have a house full of sick people. It’s too bad that we’ve been stuck inside because on Wednesday Calgary broke a century-old record with a high of 16 degrees Celsius! Here are some more historical highlights for your enlightenment, from a rare book heist to medieval depictions of elephants.

What should you do if you find a time capsule?

Have you heard of this major heist where 160 rare books – mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries – were stolen?

This man dresses up as his ancestors (with stunning results).

Fuchs’s great-great-great-great-grandfather led a distinguished military career and participated in the Peruvian war of independence

A notebook containing drafts of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poems is up for auction.

If you’re interested in the conservation of damaged books, don’t miss this post.

I don’t know much about presidential libraries, so I found this article interesting.

This article about elephant’s trunks makes you stop and think about what medieval artists were trying to communicate.

And here is one last article for you: “Retrieving an untold story: voices of Spanish female artists finally heard”

Have a pleasant weekend. I’m hoping mine will involve a lot less administering medicine, doing laundry, and getting up in the middle of the night (it’s been a rough week!).

The book heist story is fascinating — like the movie Oceans Eleven. Incredible that people really did that! Also I enjoyed the funny medieval elephant drawings.
