Favourite Things: April Edition

I think spring may have finally and completely arrived in Calgary! At least I don’t see any snow in the forecast, so I’m thinking about buying flowers for the planters I like to set out on my front steps.

How was your April? Here are some of me favourite things from the past month.

Books

Any month when I read three great novels is a good month!

In What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty Alice bumps her head and wakes up with no memory of the last ten years — including having three children and being in the middle of a nasty divorce. Not only will the story keep you turning the pages, there is so much to ponder about relationships.

I love the title of this middle-grade novel (recommended for ages 9 to 12): The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. It’s told in the first person by Ada, a girl with a clubfoot who’s evacuated from London during World War II. Harsh, but lovely.

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman is the story of an extremely grumpy old man. Who would have thought I would laugh out loud over and over?

Activities

  • Camp NaNoWriMo
  • Going home to my parents’ house for the weekend (it’s so green in Ontario compared to Alberta!)
  • Meeting my baby nephew
  • Browsing an antique shop with my sister
  • Buying tea and colour-coordinated tins (my tea cupboard will never be the same)
  • Picking out newborn clothes for a friend who just had a preemie
  • Sunday afternoon Skyping with a friend I haven’t talked to in ages

Bible

“But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.” Malachi 4:2

Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’ And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.'”
Acts 2:37-39

Music

I thought it would be fun to share some of my favourite songs, the ones I listen to while working on my novel and blog. (Disclaimer: I did not watch all the videos.)

Any favourites you’d like to share? (I’m always game to check out new to me folk-rock songs!)

I put a library hold on “A Man Called Ove”. I’m 92nd in line! I recently finished another of your recommendations, “The Madwoman Upstairs” which was very good.
