Favourite Things: October Edition

The downside of October was that we all had colds (and I still have a cough I can’t quite kick). Now that I got that out of the way, let’s talk about my October favourites!

I read a few novels this month, but nothing that I loved enough to grant more than three stars, so let’s move on to…

Picture Books

I usually steer clear of wordless picture books (only because I like reading out loud so much), but my kids love The Umbrella by Ingrid and Dieter Schubert — especially my 16-month old, who points to the black dog on every page.

Popular with my three-year-old is One Little Chicken by Elka Weber. (If you’re looking for more picture books based on Jewish folktales, click over to this post.)

I discovered a new easy reader series by Grace Lin, beginning with Ling & Ting: Not Exactly the Same!

I also found a fun ABC book: V is for Vittles: A Wild West Alphabet by Greg Paprocki.

TV Show

I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I’ve recently become obsessed with This Is Us. Andrew and I just finished the first season and are excited to continue. Leave a comment if you love it too!

Activities

  • Thanksgiving: this year we had a really nice potluck feast with our church family
  • Optometrist: I took all three kids to have their eyes checked; I find it curiously fun to watch the doctor perform the different tests and it didn’t hurt that the kids were remarkably cooperative and none of them have any vision problems (so far).
  • Boot repair: I got new zippers put in two boots (from different pairs); I love both of them and am happy to be wearing them again rather than relegating them to the landfill
  • Shopping: I bought a ton of books from Value Village during a sale (the proof is the towering stacks beside my bed), and got Andrew a Maple Leafs t-shirt for his birthday (plus a Leafs onesie for the new baby!)
  • Yard work: it’s so satisfying to have the leaves raked, the toys put away, and the sandbox covered for the winter.

Bible Verses

I read some of my favourite Psalms this month and I want to leave you with one of them.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
    we were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
    and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
    “The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
    we are glad.

Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
    like streams in the Negeb!
Those who sow in tears
    shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
    bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
    bringing his sheaves with him.
– Psalm 126
