Historical Highlights 136

Happy Friday. This week’s historical highlights touch on slavery, the Civil War, the civil rights movement, Willa Cather, Isaac Rosenberg, and even collectors of historic human hair. Enjoy.

2018 is the 100th anniversary of Willa Cather’s novel My Antonia and this article makes me want to read more of her writing.

Wednesday was the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s death; in honour this article looks at the civil right movement, specifically the role of women. (Related: can you identify anyone in these civil rights photos?)

Cornell University has put together a database of fugitive slave ads.

Read about the Bintel Brief, an advice column for Jewish immigrants. (I can see this inspiring a fascinating historical novel…)

Another interesting read, this post describes the race to be the first European to reach the fabled city of Timbuktu.

The Tenement Museum in NYC has an archive of historic trash.

Have you heard of Isaac Rosenberg, World War I poet?

Did you know that Springfield, Illinois has a Civil War museum?

Collecting hair — do or don’t?

That’s all for this week, folks.
