5 Things I Learned in May

  1. We go through a lot of bananas around here, but I haven’t had to try this trick for quick ripening yet: mashing them with egg yolks! (Read about “six highly touted speed-ripening methods” here.)

2. Canola is an acronym?! It stands for Canadian Oil Low Acid and is made from a hybrid rapeseed plant developed by Canadian scientists in the 1970s.

3. Fruit trees need a certain number of chill hours (between 32 and 45 degrees F) during the winter in order to produce flowers and fruit. For example most apple varieties need at least 1,000 chill hours, but there are low-chill varieties.

4. A parasocial relationship is a one-sided relationship, e.g. a fascination with a celebrity.

5. Milk sickness is an illness caused by consuming milk with the toxin tremetol from a cow that has eaten white snakeroot. (I learned from this excellent picture book that it was the cause of death of Abraham Lincoln’s mother.)
