8 Things I Learned in June

  1. Here’s a strange-but-true story I heard on this podcast: In 1884 organizers of an expo in New Orleans handed out water hyacinths to anyone who wanted them. The invasive plant soon took over the waterways of Louisiana and Florida and in 1910 Louisiana Representative Robert F. Broussard introduced the “American Hippo Bill,” arguing that imported hippopotamuses would eat the water hyacinths and then they could be slaughtered to provide inexpensive meat which faced a shortage! (Needless to say, this plan would have created more problems than it solved.)

2. I knew that Keith and Kristyn Getty’s hymns (e.g. “In Christ Alone”) were extremely popular, but I didn’t know that Keith was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Elizabeth II.

3. The Greek word that we get “synod” from is used in in the Bible in Luke 2:44 for the caravan of travelers who were leaving Jerusalem.

4. Aerial drones can use LiDAR to create 3D maps and magnetometers to locate abandoned oil and gas wells.

5. Aquatic drones can be used to explore underwater.

6. Philadelphia-style ice cream (unlike French-style) does not contain eggs.

7. Have you heard of celebrity Oreos? We tried the Selena Gomez ones and I heard the Post Malone flavour was good, but I’m not a fan of the concept!

8. Our microwave has a child lock (which apparently my child activated and I had to google how to turn it off).

What did you learn in June?

We’re both still smiling at the thought of hippopotami tearing up the countryside and waterways of Louisiana. Also wondering what the Selena Gomez Oreos tasted like.
