9 Things I Learned in January

  1. Canola oil has an excellent fatty acid profile (according to this book) and since I buy organic expeller pressed oil I’m finally going to stop worrying that it’s unhealthy (it’s cheaper than olive oil and butter and the neutral flavour and liquid state often comes in handy).

2. Sourdough starter can survive for years in the freezer, though I’m not sure I recommend it since my bread is still not up to snuff after weeks of feeding my starter.

3. The piperine in black pepper helps the body absorb the anti-inflammatory compound in turmeric.

4. The Age of Innocence was the first novel by a woman to win a Pulitzer (1921).

5. A new Sense and Sensibility movie is coming out in September!

6. “Factitious” means artificial or invented rather than genuine.

7. A guyot is an undersea volcanic mountain with a flat top.

8. Icebergs are classified by size as very large, large, medium, small, bergy bit (?!), and growler.

9. Mirages can be seen in the Arctic Ocean, as well as in deserts.
