10 Things I Learned in March

Check out all the miscellaneous things I learned in March! I feel like such an accomplished woman. (You might disagree when you read my list…)

  1. There are more public libraries than Starbucks in the U.S. This fact makes me smile.

2. The song “Waltzing Matilda” is based on true story and even has its own museum.

3. Industrial churns turn cream into butter in three seconds.

4. You can see the prices (and nutritional info) of food items from the Superstore on their website. This is so helpful for comparing prices before heading to the bulk food store (where I can never remember if the prices are a good deal).

5. “Floruit” (abbreviated fl.) is used for a date when someone is known to have been alive, if the dates of their birth and date are unknown. (E.g. Molly Williams, fl. 1818)

6. Through the Calgary Public Library website you can take an unlimited number of Lynda.com courses for free (using your library card number and pin).

7. After 4.5 years of home ownership I think I’m finally getting the hang of keeping my house (reasonably*) clean. The reasons? 1) Decluttering is motivating. 2) David Allen’s two-minute rule.
3) Accepting the fact that cleaning takes time and must be prioritized to make life less stressful. (*Floors remain my downfall.)

8. My kids are old enough to listen to audiobooks in the car. We listened to this one and are in the middle of this one. So much better than kids songs or even the radio.

9. A trick for making a pork roast in the slow cooker without the rub slipping off: put it in the oven at 500 degrees for ten minutes first. (I made delicious pulled pork using this recipe.)

10. My cousin told me I should admit that I just figured out how the Kardashians and Jenners are related. What can I say? Pop culture is not my strong suit.

What did you learn in March?

I have such fond memories of listening to audio books and colouring for hours on end when I was little. A dramatized version of the horse and his boy, Middle March (I can still remember the theme music!) and the E.B. White books read by the author were my favourite.
