Favourite Things: November Edition

November was full of the usual midwife appointments, book club, and colds (we seem to come down with something every two weeks!), but also some special activities. Read on for my November favourites!

Novels

I discovered Anne Tyler last year and she quickly became one of my favourite authors. This month I read her Pulitzer Prize winner (1989) and it did not disappoint.

I also read My Name is Lucy Barton I found it well-written but didn’t enjoy reading it and it left me feeling sad. If you like Marilynne Robinson’s novels, I think you should give it a try.

Picture Books

This cute, interactive book is fun for young children.

Kids will also enjoy looking at the world through an ant’s perspective in this book.

Here’s a classic for you!

Movie

On Saturday Andrew and I went to the movie theatre for the first time in five years. (Turns out they have reserved seating and La-Z-Boys now.) We saw Murder on the Orient Express, which was quite enjoyable with the superb cast and stunning scenery. I will definitely see Death on the Nile, if they make that Agatha Christie mystery next (but at home — I can’t be shelling out to go to the theatre every couple of years!)

Food

I discovered a lunch buffet at a new Indian restaurant near my house. Hit the spot!

We finally went to Squish Sandwich Cellar after admiring the sign every time we strolled around Banff. It was a fun, casual spot and we enjoyed our sandwich, poutine, and milkshake.

Activities

We took a mini vacation (babymoon, if you will) to Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia. Highlights include relaxing in the hot springs, seeing bighorn sheep in the hotel parking lot, watching the kids react to a foot-long hotdog, and ducking into all the shops in Invermere. (See also: my post about the history of the Columbia Valley.)

Andrew spent five days visiting relatives in Ontario and New York this month. I was pleasantly surprised with how well we coped without him and enjoyed the experience vicariously through texts and photos.

I crossed several things off my “before baby” list: clearing all the bottles out of the garage and taking them to the bottle depot, reconfiguring the car seats in our van, and finishing a six-week exercise challenge. I’m almost done my Christmas shopping, but still have some sewing to do (not to mention organizing our desk and filing cabinet…).

Bible Verse

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.– 2 Thessalonians 3:16

What a pleasant surprise to have your husband and his youngest brother join us for our supper club during his trip to NY! It was so good to see them both and hear about their lives to the north.
