Favourite Things: February Edition

February may be the shortest month, but I’m not short on fun things to share with you. Let’s dive in.

Books

I’m currently listening to Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by comedian Trevor Noah and finding it absolutely riveting. I’m learning and laughing in equal measure. I think this would make a fantastic, if unconventional, book club pick. I recommend the audiobook because it’s read by the author and you get to hear him read sentences in other languages, like Zulu and Afrikaans.

I read Picnic at Hanging Rock in just a day or two. I enjoyed reading it, but I’m not sure I understand why it’s a classic of Australian literature. Have any of you read it or seen the movie?

The Other Goose by Judith Kerr is a cute picture book about a goose who stops a crime and has her dream come true.

My Very First Book of Animals from Usborne is colourful and engaging for young children.

Food

I borrowed this cookbook from the library and have already tried a few recipes, including sweet potato apple soup, quinoa granola bars, and baked oatmeal cups.

Last week some friends came over to meet the baby and brought an array of Indian food and a dozen mini cupcakes. What could be better?

I know Pie Day is officially March 14, but in our family we make pies on the fourth Friday in February. This year we had chicken and squash pot pie (secret ingredient: sauerkraut), Kahlua brownie pie, and caramel apple-pecan pie. While the day didn’t go exactly as planned we ended up with enough pie to last for days.

Activities

Music

Here are some recent favourite songs, introduced to me by Andrew.

Bible

My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom
    and inclining your heart to understanding;
yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God. – Proverbs 2:1-5

What are some of your February favourites?

First M.E., I want to tell you that I really look forward to your monthly blog! Secondly, I have seen the movie Picnic at Hanging Rock 3 times. It is uniquely well done in a hypnotically eerie way. The music, costumes, and setting set a mood that I believe would be difficult to do in a book. So, I recommend that you see it! Then let us know what you think! Thirdly, please keep writing! I don’t know how you find the time to do as much reading and writing as you do, but you are really gifted.
