5 Things I Learned in December

Here are five things I learned in December, a mix of personal realizations and trivia.

  1. I do not find either jigsaw puzzles or adult colouring books relaxing (they’re so much work!). What I do find relaxing is walking in the woods and reading in the bath. (As Gretchen Rubin would say, Be Margaret!)

2. Cutting hair is hard. I thought it wouldn’t be difficult to trim my daughter’s hair, but I couldn’t seem to get it straight. (It looks fine, though, so maybe it’s not such a big deal.)

3. I don’t like listening to audiobooks when I’m a passenger in the car; I prefer to have a book in my hands. I also have a hard time with audiobooks when doing housework because I can’t give the story my full attention. I guess they work best for me when I am on a long drive by myself, which is rare.

4. Tobermory, Ontario (at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula) is named after the capital of the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Inner Hebrides.

5. The first nuclear power plant to generate electricity for a power grid was in the USSR in 1954. (I gleaned this tidbit from this excellent novel, which makes it sound dull, but it was fantastic. Five out of five stars.)
