6 Things I Learned in January

Here are six miscellaneous things that I learned in January.

  1. In Australia a sandwich made in a pie iron is called a jaffle.

2. A Santa Claus melon can take many weeks to ripen (in fact I still have one sitting on my counter since December and it hasn’t turned yellow yet; I may need to report back later).

3. I had heard of the seven deadly sins (pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth) but I didn’t know that virtues also have groupings. The cardinal virtues are prudence, courage, temperance, and justice, while the theological virtues are faith, hope, and charity (love).

4. E.L. Konigsburg is the only author to win the Newbery Medal and be a runner-up in the same year (for From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth, both published in 1967). She won again for The View from Saturday, published in 1996.

5. GLAM is an industry sector that refers to galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. Since I am interested in all these things, I’m surprised that I hadn’t heard this acronym before.

6. One of the nicknames of Charleston, South Carolina is “The Holy City.”

      M.E. Bond says:

At first I read that the nickname was due to the number of churches, but Wikipedia says it was likely coined as “a mockery of Charlestonians’ self-satisfied attitude about their city.”
