Favourite Things: May Edition

Despite a house hunting setback this month, there were plenty of positive happenings. Not to mention I think spring has finally arrived in Grey County!

Read

This month was a bit disappointing, reading-wise, but here are two adult nonfiction books that I highly recommend: Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup and For the Children’s Sake: Foundations of Education for Home and School.

While on the road the kids and I have been listening to a classic, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

If you’re looking for picture books to read aloud here are some of my favourites of the past month: The Sneetches and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss, Nothing by Jon Agee, and The Seeing Stick by Jane Yolen.

Finally, I want to share a quick read, an article with an easy parenting hack: “Create a ‘Noticing Wall’ for Your Kid.”

Eat

I tried two new muffin recipes with good results: egg-free banana muffins and zucchini muffins (FYI I generally use whole wheat flour and reduce the sugar to about half a cup per dozen muffins).

For a quick, decadent treat try this five-minute chocolate mousse.

Do

I’ve become interested in bird watching this month, when we finally saw birds at our feeder which hung desolate all winter. Birds we’ve seen at the feeder or on the ground include brown-headed cowbird, goldfinch, blue jay, mourning dove, rose-breasted grosbeak, and downy woodpecker.

I can’t neglect to mention that one of my favourite parts of this month has been spending a week at my parents’ house, where they have lived for 25 years. It gives me pleasure to see the kids playing in the creek where I played as a child, taking them to the local library, walking in the woods, and spending time with relatives.

Listen

If you’re interested in Indian food or fusion cuisine, you might enjoy this episode of the Bon Appétit Foodcast — an interview with Priya Krishna, the author if Indian-ish. (I haven’t checked out the cookbook yet.)

Since we had our seventh anniversary this month I thought it would be fun to share our first dance song.

Watch

Need inspiration to start a new exercise routine? I’ve been doing Blogilates workouts for years, so I thought I’d mention that Cassey Ho is putting out a 28-day “Summer Sculpt” programme starting Monday June 3rd. It’s completely free (like all her workouts on YouTube) and I’m looking forward to it!

Meditate

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”
Colossians 3:12-14

My favourite May thing today (who knows what my favourite thing might be another day) is the low-growing plant sweet woodruff which flowers this month.
