5 Things I Learned in July

July had its ups and downs (see point 5 below), but I think I came out somewhat the wiser. Here’s what I learned.

  1. Cheap dental floss is not worth saving a few bucks.

2. To make tamarind paste, soak tamarind pulp in boiling water, then squeeze it through a colander to remove the fibrous parts. Now I can make proper pad thai!

3. “Adviser” and “advisor” are both accepted spellings. According to Grammarist.com, “In the U.S. and Canada, advisor is commonly used in official job titles, but adviser is still generally preferred over advisor in North America, and advisor is only marginally more common in American and Canadian English than in other varieties of English.” Does that make any sense?!

4. When the Watergate hearings were aired on TV in 1973 some people bought long-distance lie detectors and aimed them at their screens! (Learn lots more about the Watergate scandal from Season 1 of this podcast.)

5. House hunting is an emotional roller coaster. I already knew this, but it hit home this month when we made offers on two houses and both fell through. (We’re placing an offer on another house today, so we’ll see what happens next!)

What did you learn in July?
