Historical Highlights 209

It’s the end of an era. I’ve been posting historical highlights every Friday since I started my blog at the end of August 2015, but the time has come to reduce my blogging to once a week.

I will still be collecting my favourite archives/library/history links but instead of sharing them on the blog I’m adding a new segment to my free monthly email newsletter, The Mouse & Pencil. If you’d like to subscribe, head over to my contact page.

I keep the newsletter brief, with bits of news, a recap of my blog posts, a recommended website or podcast, a favourite picture, a thought-provoking quotation, and usually an attempt at creative writing. (Last year I wrote a different form of poetry each month; this year I’m working through The Writer’s Workshop; suggestions for next year?)

I’ll be more select in the links that I share, collecting my very favourite pieces of news, articles, and blog posts. In that spirit, here are four interesting links. I hope you’ll join my mailing list so you won’t miss out on future recommendations.

If you’re interested in the history of photography, you’ll want to read this description of an new exhibition.

This is an eye-opening look at the cost of researching and publishing art history books.

Have you heard of this 1938 anti-Nazi documentary? (Reading the article made me think of The Boys in the Boat.)

Learn about the history of slavery in Florida (it dates back to long before slaves reached Virginia in 1619).

Enjoy the long weekend and check back next week for posts on my August favourites and things I learned.
