9 Things I Learned in May

I’ve been remembering to jot down things I learned lately instead of waiting till the end of the month, so I have a pretty interesting list for you this time around. Feel free to share what you’ve learned in the comments.

  1. Food hack: if you’re making a smoothie with subpar frozen strawberries add a spoonful of strawberry jam to improve the flavour.

2. Another food hack (from my sister): throw boneless skinless chicken breasts in the slow cooker with a jar of salsa. Once cooked dump them into the bowl of a stand mixer and use the dough hook or paddle to shred the chicken. Great in a tortilla or on salad and such a nice trick when you don’t feel like getting your hands dirty.

3. Calamansi is a citrus fruit also known as a Philippine lemon or Philippine lime. (I came across it in a bottled salad dressing.)

4. A bit of gas line antifreeze added to your lawn mower’s gas tank in the spring may help it start if condensation has gotten in during the winter.

5. Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound is the only cemetery outside of England where three Victoria Cross recepients are buried.

6. There are at least six types of vaccine currently in use. I appreciated the simple explanations on this webpage (and lists of which diseases each type protects against).

7. I’ve always heard of the iconic picture book Make Way for Ducklings, but only just realized I had never read it. It’s a sweet story and now we have our own copy from a Little Free Library (we traded in another picture book).

8. Photographic memory isn’t real! At least science has not proven it’s existence. Something similar called eidetic memory is the ability to capture visual images momentarily, but even this phenomenon is difficult to verify.

9. The study of accents is absolutely fascinating. Check out this three-part series (I’m so impressed by this dialect coach):
