8 Things I Learned in October

  1. Redwood trees can have other trees (even up to 40 feet tall!) growing in their canopies.

2. Couvade syndrome is when the partner of a pregnant woman experiences pregnancy symptoms… I didn’t know this was a real thing! (No doubt it’s controversial.)

3. Carrots used to be purple, white, and red, before Dutch growers cultivated orange carrots in tribute to William of Orange in the 17th century. (I admit this fact may or may not be entirely true.)

4. Genfo and upma are types of porridge — and in ancient Rome oats were considered fit only for animal consumption.

5. Stock pots are more expensive than I realized. I thought I would buy one to streamline making applesauce, since we were given three boxes full of apples, but decided to borrow one instead. (I’ll keep my eye out for a sale.)

6. My local public library has a new app, and will be getting a new catalogue in 2022.

7. I had a biting baby for the first time, but someone we managed to get past this painful phase (I did think for a moment that I would have to wean him suddenly).

8. Am I the only person who did not know the difference between “Latino” and “Hispanic”? I’m glad I found this helpful graphic.

What did you learn in October?

  1. Lori says:

Well, now I’ve learned the difference between Latino and Hispanic! But this new-found fact goes in the November slot. I did learn another Britishism: “rumbustious” = rambunctious. A new word that can be fitted into normal conversations. Like “gubbins.”
