8 Things I Learned in March

  1. We saw a diving duck by the Mill Dam in Owen Sound. I wish I got a closer look, but I think it must have been a bufflehead because that’s the only diving duck with a white patch on its head I could find online. I want to go back and look for it again.

2. I learned the definition of twilight:

  • Civil twilight: Begins (morning) or ends (evening) when the centre of the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon
  • Nautical twilight: Begins/ends when the centre of the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon
  • Astronomical twilight: Begins/ends when the centre of the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon

3. This is one of the books I’m reading to the kids for literature; I’ve heard of most of the American folk heroes, but it was my first time learning about John Henry.

4. Be careful how much food colouring you put in your icing… let’s just say when I changed a diaper the day after we had birthday cake it was a nasty surprise.

5. “Honyocker” was a nickname for homesteaders in Montana in the early 20th century. (Learned from this historical fiction.)

6. Before March I didn’t actually know the story of how Ernest Shackleton rescued his entire crew after their failed antarctic expedition.

7. I also learned many theories about Stonehenge.

8. Finally, here’s how to make kiwi flowers — so easy!

What did you learn in March?
