5 Things I Learned in January

Here’s what I learned last month (and one thing I forgot in December…)

  1. Table salt is iodized because goiters (enlarged thyroids) due to iodine deficiency used to be widespread.

2. The medieval mathematician Fibonacci introduced Arabic numerals to Europe.

3. Bematists were surveyors in ancient Greece who were trained to measure distances by pacing.

4. Our local YMCA offers kids’ programs with crafts, toys, and games — not just swimming pools and workout equipment.

5. Gretchen Rubin’s new book, Life in Five Senses: How Exploring the Senses Got Me Out of My Head and Into the World, comes out April 18, 2023.
