7 Things I Learned in November

  1. My children are 12th generation descendants of William Brewster, who came from England on the Mayflower and became the religious leader of Plymouth Colony!

2. Illinois produces more pumpkins than any other state (possibly up to 95% of pumpkins grown in the US, but I saw conflicting reports).

3. Dogs cannot smell ducks when they are nesting because their scent is in the oil they spread on their feathers to waterproof them and they don’t use it when sitting on their eggs.

4. Phenology is the study of cyclical or seasonal events (we are learning about the phases of the moon in school).

5. Agatha Christie learned about poisons when working in a hospital dispensary during World War I.

6. I used to not like milk in my tea, but lately I realized that I enjoy it in certain types (chai, vanilla, cappuccino).

7. Speaking of milk, evaporated milk is perfect for quiche if you don’t want to buy cream. Somehow I’d forgotten about it.

What did you learn in November?

  1. Lori says:

I learned that Ann Patchett wrote at least two children’s picture books. They’re on hold at the library now so I’ll report in due time whether they are good.
