9 Things I Learned in April

  1. German Shepherds can be completely black.

    2. The kids and I have been studying amphibians and we learned that a newt is a type of salamander and an eft is a juvenile newt.

    3. A vernal pool is a body of water formed by spring rains and snow melt, which dries up in the summer.

    4. When hiking at Indian Creek we heard a noise that we thought was birds, but this website revealed that it was wood frogs.

    5. Reverse creaming is a baking technique in which you cream the butter and flour together rather than beginning with butter and sugar. (I have yet to test whether this really makes a more tender cake.)

    6. Mats.org is a car-buying service where experts helps you find a used vehicle.

    7. There are many science experiments that can only be performed and data that can only be collected during total solar eclipses.

    8. I’ve been watching clips from operas for the first time for our composer study and some of the sets are way more elaborate than I ever expected.

    9. Our adult Sunday School class has been learning about the history of the Reformed Presbyterian Church beginning from the Scottish Reformation and, though I’ve missed a few classes, I’ve learned so much. For example, in the early days of the denomination in North America, support for abolition and political dissent were two key features. I also learned that tithing was not always practiced and the question of the necessity of deacons was hotly debated.
