6 Things I Learned in May

Following Emily P. Freeman’s example, here’s my post on things I’ve learned lately.

  1. Ice cream sandwiches do not stay frozen in a cooler full of ice packs. Sad but true.

2. I thought I made pretty good spaghetti sauce and lasagna, but my mom’s are better. Her secrets: using a food processor to pulverize the onions and other vegetables, and adding a good amount of tomato paste.

3. The Alley by Eleanor Estes is a novel I read several times while growing up (I’ll always remember the bullet head man who whistles “On the Street Where You Live” and asks, “Does this dog bite?), but I just learned that it has a sequel, The Tunnel of Hugsy Goode. I’m going to start reading it to my kids this week.

4. Here’s a useful trick if you find bathing your kids exhausting:  put the shampoo and conditioner in their hair simultaneously and then you only have to rinse them once.

5. It doesn’t make sense for English Haiku to be restricted to 17 syllables. (For more interesting poetry facts, sign up for my monthly newsletter.)

6. Victoria Day has been celebrated in Canada since 1845.
