8 Things I Learned in October

I learned some pretty interesting stuff this month…

  1. In 2007 Astronaut Sunita Williams ran the Boston Marathon in space!

2. The colour chartreuse is named after a French herbal liqueur made by the Carthusian monks.

3. Caramel corn turns out okay if you forget half the sugar. (I thought the recipe saidĀ oneĀ cup… oops.)

4. A new movie written by, directed by, and starring Tom Hanks comes out in the spring. (I pay very little attention to upcoming movie, but this list was fun.)

5. There’s a full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Nashville. (Is this something everyone but me has heard of?!)

6. During the U.S. Civil War, City Point, Virginia was one of the busiest ports in the world. (Grant had his headquarters there during the Siege of Petersburg, 1864-65.)

7. Ella Rhoads Higginson (1862?-1940), first Poet Laureate of Washington State, was famous in her day for depicting the Pacific Northwest in her poetry and prose. (I shared one of her poems here.)

8. Some apple varieties are trademarked and some are not.
