Favourite Things: October Edition

Today was a pristine October day; wearing long sleeves but no coats we picked apples at our old rental house and bought squash and eggs at a nearby farm. It feels like the perfect day for recapping the past month.

Read

As soon as I started Ask Again, Yes (recommended by my sister) I knew it was just the kind of literary fiction that I love to read (tracing relationships over time); I did find it a bit of a downer in the middle but the ending was hopeful.

I am currently reading The Stationery Shop, a love story set in 1953 Iran for my book club (tomorrow night! — guess you know what I’ll be doing after I post this).

On a roadtrip the kids and I listened to Maniac Magee, a fun middle grade novel that touches on racism and homelessness, but the final CD malfunctioned so I have yet to learn the ending (I hope to pick up the book at the library tomorrow).

We also finished the Penderwick series with #5 The Penderwicks At Last.

Listen

The podcast Risen Motherhood is just what I need right now: short episodes on practical topics with the gospel at their heart.

Watch

I love a good heist movie; The Maiden Heist, starring Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken, and William H. Macy, was more ridiculous than thrilling, but I cracked up repeatedly while watching it, so I definitely recommend it.

Play

Speaking of ridiculous, try the board game That’s a Question! where you ask things like, “What would you miss more if it ceased to exist: all kinds of hats or all brands of soft drink?” and then guess what answer the other players picked.

Buy

Since moving into our new house I have been going crazy on Kijiji, buying secondhand furniture, rugs, and lamps. I love it but will need to stop spending soon! I’ve also bought and been given several plants: Christmas cactus, pothos, weeping fig, spider plants — we’ll see how I do at keeping them alive.

Do

  • House warming with friends and neighbours
  • Fundraiser for Grey Bruce Pregnancy Centre
  • Thanksgiving dinner in Ottawa (not to mention tie dying t-shirts, playing board games, and buying bagels — an excellent weekend)
  • Cousin visit: hiking, drinking tea, and eating chocolate
  • Monthly community dinner right across the street from our house
  • Harvest festival at a church downtown: face painting, cookie decorating, delicious lunch, and lots of food/plants/decorations for sale
  • Apple picking on a sunny afternoon

Meditate

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
– John 1:14
