Favourite Things: October Edition

Now that we’ve had our first snow I can look longingly back at the peak of fall foliage and mild temperatures. 🙂 I hope your October included some good books and food and that you were able to get out of the house in one way or another.

Read

Let’s start with my favourite nonfiction of the month: Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus (a fascinating look at the beliefs of a devout Muslim and his conversion to Christianity), The Feather Thief (an improbable true story of a heist of rare birds from a natural history museum), and Maybe You Should Talk to Someone (an enlightening peek into psychotherapy).

The best novels I read were Goodbye, Mr. Chips (a classic novella in which a school teacher looks back over his life) and Jade Dragon Mountain (a murder mystery set in 18th century China).

Here’s a rhyming picture book with a surprising ending that young children will love: The Giant Jumperee.

Do

I participated in a few standout events in October. First was a home school seminar/retreat on the theme “Loving Well.” It was put on virtually by the Schole Sisters and I was able to get together with one of my cousins to watch and discuss the lectures. I also got in a nice visit with my parents sans kids!

For Andrew’s birthday we spent a night at a lovely b&b and enjoyed a hot tub, cheesecake, hiking, shopping, and some really good food.

The week before last I helped some friends put on a virtual baby shower for a friend and it turned out really well. If you need ideas for gift baskets or games that work well online just let me know!

Meditate

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
– Ephesians 2:8-10
