7 Things I Learned in October

  1. A new tea chain is coming to Canada and the U.S. (Last I heard T. Kettle stores were set to open November 1st in 45 former David’s Tea locations.)

2. Before I read this book I’d never heard of a college forensics team. It sounded like a debate club to me, but I’ve since learned that “forensics is more like a track and field event. There is acting and speaking, partner events and singular events.”

3. From this book I learned about the blue people of Kentucky (they had a hereditary blood disorder called methemoglobinemia). Fascinating stuff, but unfortunately I don’t think the novel is worth recommending.

4. Kazuo Ishiguro has a new book coming out in 2021. (I’m interested because I love The Remains of the Day and I want to reread Never Let Me Go… On the other hand, The Unconsoled is one of the strangest books I’ve ever read and I gave up on The Buried Giant. Hmm.)

5. Ruby chocolate is a new variety that is neither dark, nor milk, nor white chocolate. I heard about it on the Great British Baking Show and was surprised and pleased to find some at No Frills. (Spoiler: it’s more fruity and acidic than other chocolate.)

6. Actor Stanley Tucci has written two cookbooks.

7. Finally, I had no idea that dogs can give blood.

What did you learn in October?

I think an embassy is for big important diplomatic issues between governments, usually located in a country’s capital city. A consulate to to help individual people to get visas/passports, legal help, or whatever, and they are often located wherever people are likely to need them. For example there is a Mexican Consulate in Leamington, and a Netherlands Consulate in Guelph.

On our honeymoon we had to go to Montreal, to the nearest US consulate, to process my application for a Green Card. That couldn’t be done in Ottawa even though the US Embassy is there, so our experience matches Lori’s answer exactly.

Just heard of ruby chocolate via GBBO also, and started the “blue blood” book a while ago, but decided not to finish it.
