6 Things I Learned in January

  1. Squirrels do not like safflower seed. This was great to learn because our bird feeders hang from a fence and we cannot keep squirrels away. Now we can watch from our kitchen window as juncos and chickadees eat safflower and nyjer seed. (I hope we’ll attract more species too.)

2. Jim Arnosky has written many beautiful nature picture books. I know we’ll be using a lot of them in our homeschooling.

3. We use Ambleside Online (free Charlotte Mason currciulum) and I just discovered that you can discuss the weekly nature topics (based on the Handbook of Nature Study) on their forum. I’m looking forward to sharing what we learn and getting recommendations and inspiration from others.

4. I was able to get back all the files I thought were saved to Dropbox but were somehow on my laptop that died. What a relief!

5. I learned a lot about truffles. For instance, dogs are usually used to hunt truffles nowadays because they don’t eat them, like pigs do.

6. Apparently knock knock jokes had a heyday in 1936.
