Favourite Things: April Edition

We’re in the middle of our third lockdown, but there have been some some bright spots!

Read

My favourite read of the month was This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger. It reminded me of Peace Like a River (though it has some harsher content, as it tells the story of kids escaping a residential school in the 1930s) and it’s influenced by The Odyssey and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. If you’ve read it I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Two other novels I read were Songs for the End of the World (coronavirus pandemic) and Klara and the Sun (artificial intelligence) — both interesting but not completely my cup of tea.

The kids enjoyed listening to the first three books in the “Precious Ramotswe’s Very First Cases” series, a spinoff of the “No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” novels.

Learn

I was struggling with how to introduce the kids to French in a positive way and hit on using Mo Willems picure books. So far we’ve read two books repeatedly over several weeks and the kids are still enjoying it. Now we’re waiting for more titles from the library.

Do

Speaking of the library, we were able to borrow a conservation area parking pass for a week so we used it to do some short hikes (Bognor Marsh, Hibou, Bruce’s Caves). I’m really glad that we explored some trails and even a beach near our house. We’ll be back!

For Easter we went for a walk with friends in their sugar bush and did a little egg hunt with the kids. I also made a fancy challah from The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook.

Eat

We did some barbecuing in April; I made berries and jam milkshakes (from Modern Comfort Food), a giant gallette, and baked French toast; and… Andrew made doughnuts!

Enjoy

Loving all the red and yellow tulips that have been blooming for a few weeks.

Also enjoying my haircut, shorter than I’ve cut it before. (Sorry, no picture yet.)

Andrew bought me wireless earbuds, which are lovely for listening to podcasts and audiobooks, but of course I wasn’t about to splurge on them. <3

Meditate

“I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.” – Ecclesiastes 3:10-13
