5 Things I Learned in April

  1. I’ve been able to sew for years (decades?) but I am just now learning the proper names of stitches (ladder stitch, satin stitch, backstitch, etc.)

2. Hawaij is a Yemeni spice blend I first heard of in this cookbook (equal parts ginger and cardamom with a little nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves). My recent discovery is that it is excellent sprinkled on rice pudding! (Apparently there is also a savoury version that includes turmeric, cumin, and pepper.)

3. There are some short hiking trails near Georgian Bay just a five minute drive from our house, including an interpretive trail with a boardwalk.

4. As I mentioned on Monday, Alexander McCall Smith has written a series of mysteries for kids featuring a young Precious Ramotswe (the protagonist of “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” series).

5. The original Ferris wheel held over 2000 passengers at a time.
