Favourites Things: January Edition

Hello from cold and snowy Owen Sound. I’ve got quite a few favourites to share, including a few things I forgot in December. Let’s get to it!

Read

Some great picture books: Cloud Tea Monkeys, Silly Lullaby, Someone Builds the Dream, Trillions of Trees, Blue Floats Away, Grandma and the Great Gourd.

I’m afraid our bedtime readaloud has slowed to a crawl, but we did finish a couple of school books recently: Pagoo, A Drop of Water.

I also (re)read Jane Eyre and read Liane Moriarty’s latest (I don’t want to say much except I don’t think it’s one of her best but better than her last book).

This month I started Women of the Word for a ladies’ Bible study and I’m looking forward to continuing.

Eat

I have to mention two recipes that we made twice recently: SK’s chicken and rice, street cart style and the Barefoot Contessas’s twice baked sweet potatoes. Also memorable were creamy white chicken chili, tourtiere, spanikopita, and a panda cake!

Drink

I tested out two cocktails made with grapefruit juice the Ginger Rogers (gin, ginger syrup, club soda) and Ginger Grapefruit Fizz Cocktail (vodka, gingerale). The Ginger Rogers won, according to my palate! (I used more grapefruit juice instead of lemon juice and will definitely try it again.)

Do

  • Andrew’s new job is going well, as he continues to learn the ropes
  • Sledding excursions have been less than successful, but the kids have enjoyed sliding on the snow pile across the road made by the snowplow
  • We are grateful to be invited to participate in games and sports in a rented gym once in a while
  • A church potluck was also a fun outing this month
  • I have embarked on a massive decluttering project of our entire house!

Play

In December we borrowed the card game Nature Fluxx from the library and I ended up enjoying it much more than I expected.

Watch

For the first time I had a remote movie night with my sister (for her birthday)! We watched an old favourite and had snacks, cocktails, and spa treatments. [Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! is a great movie… don’t let the critics tell you otherwise. 🙂 ]

Meditate

“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” – Romans 12:18

What are your January favourites?

January has been a long, cold month, but we’ve been enjoying the newest versions of All Creatures Great and Small (season 2), and Around the World in 80 Days, on PBS. They broadcast an episode of each every week. Hope they will both continue through February!
