9 Things I Learned in January

  1. Tu BiShvat is a Jewish holiday, the “New Year of the Trees,” established for the calculation of tithes according to Leviticus 19:23-25.

2. Giant earthworks in Ohio were built by people of the Hopewell culture, which flourished from approximately 100 B.C. to A.D. 500.

3. The co-founder of DavidsTea has a new company called Firebelly Tea that uses no lab flavourings (I still love Davids!).

4. This weekday sourdough recipe is completely doable (though after a few weeks of baking I decided I needed a break and put my starter in the fridge).

5. Wooden pizza peels are better for sliding raw pizza into the oven and metal peels are recommended for removing it. (I finally bought a peel but I’m still working on my technique.)

6. A squirrel-proof birdfeeder is not squirrel-proof if the squirrel reaches the seed while clinging to a fence. Duh.

7. I’m surprised by how much I love doing Yoga with Adriene. I wonder if I can do it every day of 2022? Thirty-three days down…

8. I don’t know how anyone can stand to be involved in politics.

9. Lest I end on a sour note, here’s another thing I learned. A friend sent me a video of her kids doing an experiment to illustrate the Mpemba effect: “the observation that a liquid (typically water) which is initially hot can freeze faster than the same liquid which begins cold, under otherwise similar conditions.” Here’s the video that inspired them:
