Favourite Things: September Edition

September was a tough month, but we had some good times, and I still have recommendations for you!

Read

Sad to say, I didn’t finish any adult books that I’m excited to share, but here’s a sweet picture book I discovered.

Eat

  • Our church started up a monthly potluck, which I appreciate so much (I love making food, sharing food, and eating food, so what could be better?)
  • I had fun creating my birthday cake by tweaking some Smitten Kitchen recipes (it was coconut/cardamom cake and chocolate cake with coconut buttercream and coconut walnut topping)

Do

  • After a summer break my online ladies Bible study started up again; we’re doing an inductive study of the book of James and even though the online format can be frustrating, studying on my own has already been a great blessing.
  • We met extended family at the Toronto Zoo and spent a day together, culminating with pizza in the park before the three hour drive home.
  • We did quite a few short hikes close to home, which I really enjoy (check out the crevice!).

Play

We borrowed My First Carcassonne from the library and it was nice and easy for the kids (now we’re trying the original version).

Listen

I recommended the Journeywomen podcast back in November 2018, and recently started listening to it again. It’s a treasure trove of discussions on theology, discipleship, and all aspects of the Christian life.

A year ago I mentioned listening to Great Big Sea songs as a pick-me-up…but promptly forgot about it. Last week I listened to their album Play on YouTube. Yup, still a mood-booster for the late afternoon slump!

Meditate

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” – James 1:2-4

“Believe God’s love and power more than you believe your own feelings and experiences. Your rock is Christ, and it is not the rock that ebbs and flows but the sea.” – Samuel Rutherford
