5 Things I Learned in September

I have a bird theme going on…

  1. Goldfinches lay their eggs in late summer instead of early summer like most other birds – they wait until thistles go to seed so they can use the fluff in their nests and the young birds can eat the thistle seeds.

2. From 1973 to 1995 the Baltimore oriole and the Bullock’s oriole were considered one species (northern oriole). I’m glad that got straightened out again. 😉

3. The swans in Harrison Park are descended from six swans given to the mayor of Owen Sound by King George V in 1912.

4. When I was researching the World War II Polish Army Training Camp in Owen Sound, I learned that Norway also had a training camp in Ontario (“Little Norway” on Toronto Island and later in Muskoka).

5. A “keeping room” is a room next to the kitchen where family and friends can hang out and keep the cook company. (Am I the only one who has never heard this term?)
