10 Things I Learned in May

  1. PC Black Label Ice Cream is incredibly creamy; the flavours are not as varied as say Ben & Jerry’s, but I was pleasantly surprised by the rich consistency of the salted caramel and the chocolate hazelnut. (Try them when they’re on sale!)

2. When we were in Toronto for our anniversary we went to a Jamaican buffet and tried ackee and saltfish, tripe and beans, oxtail, porridge, and more. Next time maybe we can take my Jamaican sister-in-law since we weren’t quite sure what all the food was!

3. Also in Toronto I saw a sign for cannabis infused smoothies (didn’t try them though!).

4. Have you heard of Swimply? It’s like Airbnb, but you can rent a private pool by the hour!

5. Hendiadys is a figure of speech where two words are joined with “and” instead of one modifying the other, e.g. “try and do” instead of “try to do” or “sound and fury” instead of “furious sound.” (If you like figures of speech, last month I shared the concept of merism.)

6. The acronym TTFN (ta-ta for now) appeared during World War II on a radio comedy called ITMA (It’s That Man Again) that poked fun at the abundance of military acronyms.

7. Canicross is the sport of cross-country running with a dog (wearing a harness attached to one’s waist belt). Similar sports are bikejoring and skijoring… you can probably figure out what they entail!

8. A 1969 cipher by the infamous Zodiac Killer was cracked in 2020.

9. Queen Victoria had many nicknames over her lifetime, both English and German.

10. In the Age of the Telegraph, code books were used by merchants to make their messages economical and secret.

In May I learned that broccoli leaves are good to eat, in salad or steamed with other greens. You can get some good nutrition before the heads form.
