5 Things I Learned in March

  1. I learned the difference between tubers, rhizomes, bulbs, and corms. Tubers (like dahlias) get sprouts all over them. Rhizomes (like irises) grow horizontally and send out shoots and roots. Bulbs (like tulips) have layers like an onion. Corms (like crocuses) are solid and multiply by growing new corms while the old one dies.

2. Our basil and parsley flourished through the winter even though they were in a sun room that got very cold at night.

3. “Scarborough Fair” is a paradox or riddle song that asks someone to do impossible things. (I only knew the first verse before. )

4. Ab urbe condita (AUC) meaning “from the founding of the city” is the way the Romans counted dates beginning with 753 BC (the traditional founding date of Rome) as year 1.

5. You have to pay to check your coat at the ROM. Boo. I expected it to be free like the museums in Ottawa.
