Favourite Things: March Edition

Bring on spring!

Read

I’m currently working through a few books, but the only one I finished in March was I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger. I didn’t know it was going to be a dystopian novel and I wish I had someone to discuss it with! Side note: I love that the cover is based on a Group of Seven painting (“Bay of Islands” by Franklin Carmichael).

Eat

  • I made sourdough with sunflower and sesame seeds that turned out much better than my regular recipe. I’ve made it twice and plan to do it again. (From this cookbook.)
  • We had 99 cent ice cream cones from Stewart’s on St. Patrick’s Day. I tried the limited edition Philly Espresso… not very strong coffee but the vanilla with caramel and chocolate was right up my alley.
  • For her thirteenth birthday Eleanor made her own lasagna and trifle to rave reviews.

Do

  • On March 14 I took two friends out for breakfast at Sweet Emilie’s and then we had Pi Day at church (sweet and savoury pies and all kinds of board games).
  • We also had a church talent show in March; our family performed piano pieces, a song/skit, Swedish drill, and a recitation.
  • We met a therapy rabbit while shopping at Dollar General.
  • We drove down to Toronto to visit Andrew’s brother and enjoyed a day at the Royal Ontario Museum, church, and playing with the kids’ cousin inside and at the playground.
  • I’ve been enjoying a YouTube channel that my sister recommended for strength training: Kayleigh Cohen Strength. Now I want to buy some more dumbbells!

Play

Of course we had to learn a new game when we were in Toronto. We played Mamma Mia, a pizza-themed card game by the creator of Bohnanza. I’d definitely play again. We also had fun with a marble run called GraviTrax Junior.

Grow

I bought a seedling heat mat and we started some seeds at the beginning of March, but they haven’t had the best success rate (most of them were free from the seed library and apparently past their prime). So far we have lots of romaine and kale sprouts, some parsley, two cherry tomatoes, and one banana pepper.

Meditate

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” – Colossians 3:12-17
